Whatever superlatives I might use to describe Still Waters cannot convey what it feels like to be there, in that room, that community. To experience what Stephen Haff and his wonderful teachers and volunteers are making happen. The space – actual, psychic—they have created for the children and adults who walk through their doors. The sense of excitement and possibility and poetry. The aura of delight in reading and music, in learning, the quiet and curious and respectful listening to one another, the sense of permission and “what if…?” makes me think of Emily Dickinson’s : “I Dwell in Possibility.” Blake says “What is now Proved was once only Imagined.” It is so clear Stephen Haff has imagined, and continues to imagine, and build, a place of possibility. To help those who walk through their doors–day after week after year– imagine their own Possibilities. It was astonishing. And fun. I can’t wait to go back. It’s no wonder Still Waters is called a sanctuary.
