Almost everyone I have ever talked to or read about who has emerged from poverty to live a full and happy life attributes their success to one extraordinary teacher—one who sees their potential early, and encourages them to believe that they can lay claim to the world in a way they never imagined possible. Having now visited Still Waters, I believe that Stephen Haff will be that teacher to the kids lucky enough to find their way to that lovely place. He brings to his classroom the brilliant imagination, energy, and empathy that are the marks of a truly great teacher. And he expects, and coaxes, from his kids, even the very little ones, those same qualities in return. I was astonished to hear about their ambitious curriculum—Don Quixote in two languages! Latin conjugations! Written meditations on all sorts of subjects! Small wonder that he attracts such a crew of volunteers—working there is likely the inspiring fuel that drives them for the rest of the week.
