I was told by author Peter Carey that the day I would spend teaching writing at Still Waters in a Storm would be one of the highlights of my year, and he was right. I won’t soon forget these kids — their enthusiasm, their creativity, their contagious energy, their eagerness to absorb . . . nor will I forget the atmosphere of inclusion and mutual respect that Stephen Haff has fostered at his one-room schoolhouse in Bushwick. (His rule, that “everyone listens to everyone,” is as good a general axiom as I’ve ever come across, and even more profound in practice than I could have imagined.) Still Waters in a Storm is truly a wonder, and a gift to the city and its denizens.
