In Search of La Cantidad Justa: Yum!
A Collaboration with The Animation Project (TAP). This 3-minute film is based on Proust's In Search of Lost Time, in which the narrator eats a cookie and suddenly remembers his boyhood in vivid detail. In our case, the cookie is replaced by tamales and conchas. The students tell stories of their food-inspired memories, as one of the mothers shows and explains how to make tamales, accompanied by an original song. Like Proust, this is as much painting as narrative.
Journey to the Underworld
The second episode of our Aeneid project follows Aeneas as he descends into the Underworld to seek guidance from his deceased father. He tries three times to hug the ghost of his dad, but in this virtual world a hug is impossible. This 7-minute movie was made by the kids of Still Waters in a Storm during the pandemic, a collaboration far and wide with our friends at The Animation Project.
Journey to Home
Beginning in June of 2020, deep into the pandemic, the kids of Still Waters in a Storm began translating THE AENEID, by Vergil, from Latin into Spanish and English, on Zoom. Then we reunited with our composer Kim Sherman and began a collaboration with The Animation Project to adapt the ancient Roman myth of refugee people fleeing their ruined homeland, sailing the seas in search of a new, safe home as our first-ever animated movie, in which we are the refugees. We lost our classroom because we couldn't continue paying for space we couldn't use, and we are on a virtual voyage until the day we can safely come ashore. Every child participated in the process--you can see the many different styles of drawing, with Latin, Spanish and English words embedded in the images, and hear the many home-made sound effects and multilingual spoken vocals, joined by the yearning voice of Jamie singing the songs she co-wrote with Kim and Jonathan and Olivia. The movie you're about to watch represents Book One of THE AENEID and runs five minutes. Enjoy, and feel free to share! There's more to come!
